Types of exfoliants for different skin types and benefits of exfoliation

Exfoliation is a method of removing old skin from the skin's outermost layer. It is very important to exfoliate our skin at least once a week ideally at night time as it removes the dead skin cells.

There is two type of Exfoliation:

Physical exfoliation : Physical exfoliation is done by using small grains such as apricot shell or almond shells etc. Also known as scrubs.

More brushes, sponges ,exfoliating gloves and microdermabrasion also fall under this category.
Physical exfoliation helps to clear out the outer skin. But it is not ideal to used for all skin types specially for the people who have sensitive or the people with acne. Moreover, if you put rub these exfoliants a lot it can micro tear your skin.

2. Chemical Exfoliation: Unlike physical exfoliating, chemical exfoliating do not have any grains. In this acids or fruit enzymes are used. Chemical exfoliants completely remove the dead surface cells from the skin by completely penetrating into upper layers of skin. Enzymes looses the glue like substance that keeps the skin cell together.

There are mainly two type of chemical exfoliants are used.
  • AHA (Alpha Hyroxy Acids) : These acids only spike into upper layers of skin. They do not go very deeply. These are good for mild exfoliation and very good for dry skins as well as sun damaged skin. Glycolic acid and lactic acids are also part of AHA's. These also produce collagen which firms the skin so they are good for aging skin as well.
  • BHA (Beta hydroxy acid) : These acids penetrate into deeper layers of your skin and clean out your pores deeply. These are oil soluble so they are very good for acne prone or sensitive skin. They help in reducing the black heads as well. They have anti inflammatory and anti bacterial properties as well. Salicylic acid is the type of BHA which you can use.
